Creating Lasting Change One Step At A Time

Meaningful change doesn’t happen by chance in any organization or network—it happens by design. Whether shifting culture, launching a new initiative, or rethinking how your organization operates, creating sustainable change requires a clear and intentional approach.

Three simple steps to go about a change process are to normalize, organize, and operationalize.

Normalize: The first step in driving change is to normalize the conversation by creating a shared understanding and sense of purpose. This means establishing the desired change as a core value across your organization or network. Whether introducing a new leadership model, shifting your approach to service delivery, or embedding a new strategic focus, it’s essential to build clarity and alignment. Create space for conversations defining the change, why it matters, and how it connects to your broader mission. When people across your organization can speak the same language and understand the “why,” it becomes easier to move forward together.

Organize: Change can’t happen without the right people and structures in place. It requires us to organize by building internal capacity, investing in skills and competency training, team development, and leadership support. Equally important is creating infrastructure that supports change—such as internal working groups, cross-functional teams, and partnerships with external collaborators or community stakeholders. This is about equipping people not only with knowledge, but with the tools and relationships needed to carry the work forward.

Operationalize
Finally, move from theory to practice. Implement new ideas and commitments through tools, policies, and accountability structures. This might include updating decision-making processes, creating action plans, setting measurable goals, or embedding new practices into daily workflows. Operationalizing ensures that the change becomes part of the organization’s DNA—not just a one-time initiative.

Lasting change is a journey, not a checklist. Organizations can create the conditions for real transformation- one step at a time- by normalizing the vision, organizing the right people and structures, and operationalizing with clarity and consistency.
